Music & Health
Music Program at the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center
PDX Vox is partnering with a team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at PeaceHealth to create a more peaceful, comforting, and healing environment for its infants and their caregivers. Working with board-certified music therapists as well as the NICU medical staff and parents of former patients, it is currently developing a music and sound intervention program that is grounded in research and responsive to the physical and emotional needs of patients, caregivers, and staff. The aim of the program is to enhance the care that the infants receive as well as provide parents with support, stress relief, and special opportunities to connect with their children.
Call for Healing Musicians!
One component of the project at PeaceHealth Southwest is the Healing Musicians Program. We are currently hiring cellists, guitarists and harpists to play soothing instrumental music in the common areas of the NICU. All the details can be downloaded here.
Performances in Healthcare
Music Performances and Sing-Alongs for Elders
The connections between music, emotional health and memory are well-documented. Since music and language are stored and processed in different parts of the brain, people who struggle with memory and communication due Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurological conditions can often access memories and language through music rather than through simple language.
All of the groups in the PDX Vox 13-week sessions visit at least one assisted living residence, to perform the songs they are learning and to engage elders in a sing-along and conversation about music. Among the residences that PDX Vox groups have worked with:
- Bridge Meadows
- The Courtyard at Mt. Tabor
- Grace Peck Terrace
- Hawthorne Gardens
- Laurelhurst Village
- Providence Elderplace at Irvington Village
- Providence House
- Rose Schnitzer Manor
- Marquis Mt. Tabor
- Pacifica Senior Living / Calaroga Terrace
- Raleigh Hills Assisted Living
- Regency Park Assisted Living
- Russellville Commons
- St. Andrews Care Center
- The Uptown
Are you interested in having PDX Vox lead a performance/sing-along at your facility? If so, please send us a message.
Workshops in Healthcare
Creative Renewal Workshops for Caregivers
Caregivers and health providers often struggle with stories that go untold and emotions that don’t get fully expressed. Both professional and personal caregivers can suffer from burnout that goes unaddressed, due to the pressures of their daily responsibilities.
PDX Vox offers artistic workshops a few times a year to caregivers and health providers. Participants engage in music, writing, visual art, or some combination of these as a chance to de-stress, get some play time, and lighten their moods. The workshops enable participants to share their stories through their art and discuss ways in which artistic practices might translate to their daily work to promote wellness among their patients, colleagues, and loved ones.
