Structure of the Class

Each session of PDX Vox runs for 13 weeks. Singers can sign up for a 90-minute basic class or a 2 1/2 hour extended class.

• In Basic Vox, singers work with the director in a group of 18-20 people and learn 4 songs. This is a 90-minute weekly commitment.
• Complete Vox includes an additional hour of small-group work, where singers are put into groups of 6-8 people to learn 2 songs. The small-group program is recommended for singers who feel comfortable learning their parts semi-independently and can hold their part alone in a group. Singers who participate in the small-group workshop are strongly encouraged to attend rehearsal every week, as their absence will substantially affect the rehearsals and the balance of sound in the small group.

While the focus of the program is to improve singing skills through the learning and refinement of songs, the director also works with the groups on vocal technique, stage craft, basic music theory, and choral blending.

At the beginning of session, the director holds an all-group retreat, which is a half-day weekend event filled with music, designed to orient both new and returning singers.

Near the end of the session, the groups perform the songs they have learned for family and friends at an end-of-session show, and at an additional performance at an senior living residence.
